So, there's this [absolutely free] site that I've recently become aware of, and they do it right. It's based on something called the
Music Genome Project which started almost 6 years ago. You can read more about it on their page, but if you're interested in a quick summary, here you go: People who love music and people who love technology put their heads together to find similar music, based on the "genes" of the music. These were then compared across species. You go to the page, type in an artist you like. You press play. The first track will be a representative track of the artist you typed in. In my case, I recognized the representative song by the artist I typed in, and the second song that the machine generates that is a similar song to the first one. I was mildly impressed. The third and fourth songs were completely new to me. You should try it! Just in time for the holidays!
The next two to three weeks of my life are going to be busy and complicated with school projects. I'm interested in hearing how Pandora made your life better or worse. Here's a link to the site:
Pandora. I'd recommend only using it if you've got a decently high-speed connection.

In addition, there is a cool site/program that I use similar to what I think Pandora is. It's called MusicStrands.com. It takes people's playlists and recommends songs and artists based on everyone and what they play. What is played before it and after it. And also what tags people have associated with them. The other nice thing is it works along side iTunes. (Although it's annoying that it automatically launches.)
You should check it out as well.
What an evil, evil site Pandora is. Yeah, I know the name is a hint. Still. Neh.
