you know it's great to be alive, takes the skin right off my hide

Since I heard parts of M Ward's new album "Post-War" I've been excited to hear it all in it's shiny plastic disc form. That day comes August 22, the day I officially break my moritorium on buying things that aren't food and gas. Three great songs can be heard here. The always brilliant Neko Case sings backup on "To Go Home"

Now, for some ire. I'm not particularly pleased that most of the folks who have already listened to most or all of the album say that Post-War is a decidedly political album. It is in the sense that he's tapping the aesthetic and age of Hemingway et al. It is not political in the sense that it is for or against the current situation with the US and the middle east. If you listen to the album, make it your mission to preserve this distinction. Talk about careworn USO enterntainers, hearts broken from losing firefights with nazis, etc. but don't mention lasers, missiles, high tech warfare, etc. It gets the job done the old fashioned way, and it really pays off. Buy Post-War when you can, and crank it. It is fantastic. Even by Ward's own admission, it's his favorite album. This time a full band helps out and you can really feel it.

My early favorite is Magic Trick and it's got the swagger of a Billy Bragg and wilco collaboration, with a little bit of pet sounds mixed in.
