Upon my return to (currently not so) sunny southern California, I chked on my kombucha project. Full success! It tastes like cider, has a nice little bubbly action and does not smell that bad at all. Supposedly a panacea, I'm sampling it in small doses for the time being. If I start to lose my eyesight and sanity, I'll flip a coin to decide if it is age or the tea I fermented. Still to do: take it into the lab for some analysis...what is the culture made of, what is the % alcohol, what is the pH and CO2 concentration, etc. Plate streaking and hygrometer readings for me.

Also, I did see the movie "300." I enjoyed it, but don't think it is anywhere near "instant classic" The set was spartan (little s) and the story was a little bit overwrought. I made the mistake going in to the movie of thinking that it was about the battle of Thermopalye. It was really about style and red-blooded machismo with some story line thrown in. It played out a little bit like a video game with a bigger and badder boss being fought every few minutes. As far as a movie mimicking a graphic novel, I'd say this was one of the best attempts we've seen. Probably in the top 3. As a friend pointed out, the words "Sparta" or "Spartan" were used on average about once a minute. On more than one occasion, a messenger from the bad guys gets killed by our intrepid Leonidas. You don't see that much, and I'm still not sure how to take it. It was exciting and revolting at the same time.
