Day Two has been eluded to here already, but it was a jaunt up to Interstate 40 from Interstate 20. There was a dramatic non change of scenery for the first 8 hours. We finished in the wilds of New Mexico with it's shrubs and mesas dominating the skyline. We had to drive up from Santa Fe to Taos in the dark. That's about when things took a sour turn. The drive was slow because of the rain and frequent lightning that will kill your night vision.
In a rainy parking lot in complete darkness, we heard that the people we were supposed to stay with had decided to get a hotel because of the recent and tragic loss of their landlord/nextdoor neighbor. Taos rarely gets rain, and the power rarely goes out. That night it had done both with a vengeance. The next morning, it was pretty and the air was crisp and clean. It was refreshing enough to power us through the next day, and about 400 miles closer to the destination.
